Dion Sanderson becomes Rovers’ first signing of the January transfer window, joining on loan from Birmingham City until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old’s arrival at Ewood Park, where he will bolster Rovers’ defensive ranks, sees Sanderson reunited with head coach John Eustace, who he worked with at both Birmingham City and QPR.

The centre-back started his career at Wolves, joining the Midlands club at the age of eight and making his debut in a League Cup tie away to local rivals Aston Villa in October 2019.

A succession of successful loan spells followed, with Sanderson spending the second half of the 2019-20 season with Cardiff City, who reached the Championship play-offs, before having a season-long loan spell with Sunderland, who he helped to reach the League One play-offs in 2020-21.

Sanderson spent the first half of the 2021-22 season on loan at Birmingham City, before linking up with QPR for the second half of the Championship campaign.

Two days after John Eustace was appointed Birmingham boss, in July 2022, Sanderson returned to St. Andrew’s on loan for the season, making 34 appearances, before joining on a permanent four-year deal in July 2023 and being appointed captain.

The defender made 40 appearances under five different managers at Birmingham last season, but was unable to prevent the club from slipping into League One.

His switch to Rovers, which is subject to EFL/FA approval, sees Sanderson return to the Championship and reunite with John Eustace for the third time in his career.

Welcome, Dion!
